The year of no tv

A while back I blogged about our decision as a family to go without tv for a year. Well today marks the official first day of our "no tv "year!

Needless to say this past week we crammed in about all the tv we could stand, watching EVERYTHING we had recorded and watching things we didn't even care that much about! Last night was bitter sweet as we turned off our tv for the last time. When we called to cancel our cable this evening and explained our reason for canceling the representative's response was "that's weird." She may have said out loud what many of you are thinking now! And that is totally ok. We know it is a little weird. Our hope is that this next year we will grow closer as a couple and a family as well as growing closer to our God. Not to mention all the neat hobbies we are sure to acquire in the process!

When we mention our new family dynamic to others they often ask what our "rules" will be. So here they are:
1. No TV in our house for one year (Octber 4, 2010 to October 4, 2011)
2. One movie rental once a month for a date night/family night
3. One in theater movie every other month for a date night
4. News podcast may be watched ONLY while running on the treadmill
5. TV may be watched while on vacation, when invited to friends houses, or if we have family staying with us who can somehow figure out how to hook up their sling box to our tv (Lolly and Pops!) - We don't want to force our decision as family on anyone else.

Tonight we went out for icecream to celebrate the start of this new adventure as a family.
We look forward to sharing all the ups and downs of this journey with you!

So here is question for ya: once the kids are in bed and you have the house to yourselves what kinds of things (besides watching tv) do you like to do before going to bed?

I know I don't have kids, but I wanted to contribute some ideas!Scrap book, make cards, learn to sew. Also, one night a week you could make a fun dessert for you and Josh to share together! Baking/cooking takes time and it can be enjoyable. Invite a few friends over for an evening of tea/coffee and conversation. Have Fun!

Ideas: have people over (easier if they don't have kids), play games: cards, put a puzzle together (we have never done this), quiet house projects, since you are in Cali and can grow things year round: plant some herbs in pots on your patio, read to each other (I usually fall asleep when we do this), journal, listen to books, sermons or the radio together, that is often when I clean downstairs. I hope you find some more creative things to do and share then with all of your readers :) Since you like some of the dancing shows- maybe you and Josh could learn how to dance together :) Can checking out instructional videos from the library count?
